K9 Nose Work!

Also called: Sport Detection, Detection Sports, Scent Detection, Scent Work etc.

Nose Work is a sport that has aspects of professional detection work, but setup for pet dogs to find trained target odours (typically essential oils).

We can’t say enough good things about Nose Work. Any dog with a nose can do it!
Benefits are vast and not limited to:
- Building relationship & teamwork between dog & handler
- Classes are typically dog reactive dog friendly as dogs work one at a time
- Increased mental exercise
- Increased confidence
- Increased focus
- Giving dogs ‘a job’ that are meant/bred to be working
- Learning to read your dog
- Very easy to practice, accessible for home practice in between classes

Sometimes we can get a bit preoccupied with the dog we 'wished' we had.
This may result in us exposing our dog to experiences, things, or places that make them uncomfortable. Or being disappointed or frustrated with behaviours we don’t desire in our canine companions.

It's important to meet your dog where they're at and embark on the training journey together. No dog is perfect, most behaviours we dislike are usually quite normal and learning about your dog can help you with your patience & expectations a lot!

Set realistic goals and expectations, and when you reach those, set new goals to work towards!

Puppy biting is a normal natural behaviour! That doesn’t mean it’s not one of the more frustrating things for the humans to work on. There is no ‘fix’ for puppy biting, just guidance and reduction during this natural process. Keeping those teeth busy & satisfied is key!

We get asked a lot “is it a problem if..(fill in the blank)” In most scenarios our answer is “it’s only a problem, if it’s a problem!”

Some of these questions are from old myths in old school dog training like “don’t allow your dog on furniture” *insert eye roll here* that still float around. Is it a problem your dogs on the bed? Well.. is it? Do you like it? Do they display any dangerous or undesired behaviours related to the bed?

Even in our own Senior Trainers home two of the three dogs are allowed on the bed. The one dog that is not encouraged to be on the bed Karen is allergic to and sheds (and just generally dirtier) than the others. So it isn’t desirable!

Your dog is leash reactive to dogs on walks but loves their best friends they play with. Can we still do that? Well… is it a problem? Probably not!

You set your goals and wants for your dogs and household. They don’t have to mold to anyone else’s!

The nose knows! Did you know sniffing is crucial for dogs to live their best lives! Not only is sniffing one of the best ways to provide mental enrichment it is usually the dogs favourite thing to do.

We can manufacture sniffing by playing games with food. Outside we call it “sniff stations” where we use grass space to make an outdoor snuffle mat of sorts! Inside we play “Easter egg” hunts. Setting out dog treats around the space in accessible places (so self reward can happen) and letting them find them. Keep these games short and fun to start to build motivation.

Coastal Canine Training Services Inc. is Hiring a New Dog Training Professional!

We are looking for a dynamic individual to join our science-based training team part-time (full-time option is available after growth, if desired). This role will include instruction of group classes, as well as private client training, and is quite flexible for the right person.

What we want:

The ideal candidate will exhibit high standards, excellent communication skills, have an ability to take initiative, and have a strong belief in continuing education.

The ability to work unsupervised just as well as in a team setting is also important.

Applicant must have a formal education in dog training/dog behaviour. Please provide all educational certifications with email inquiry/resume.

So, what's in it for you? Hours, pay, perks... The good stuff:

Option to work remotely/virtually from home (for some shifts).

In-person shifts (private sessions & classes) will be in the Tri-Cities (Coquitlam, Port Moody, Poco). You must be able to work in the Tri-Cities three days per week at minimum, including one weekend day.

We strongly believe in paying a good living-wage to all of our employees. The exact rate will be determined based on skill & experience. We also offer education credits, & other perks.

Last Chemo treatment yesterday! ✅✅ Today marks just over a year since our Dot become very ill with encephalitis which almost took her life and resulted the loss of one eye. She will always require medication to keep her immune system at bay but yesterday marked her LAST chemotherapy treatment! This is big, Dot has been attending chemotherapy every 3-5weeks for over a year to help her heal. It is hard on her little body but with further between sessions and medication she is typically feeling feisty and full of life!
We will never forget our generous & supportive community including friends, clients & local businesses that all donated their time, money & goods/services to raise money for dots extended care beyond vet insurance. Bone & Biscuit LEASH Loft & Spa Uptown Dawg Wags K-9 Teeth Cleaning. Dapper Dog Daycare and Grooming (Jens Silver & Memory of Maggie May I can't find tags.)
I can't help but mention that without your help & a great pet insurance I would not of been able to afford to help Dot which got above $20K in the year.
Though vet insurance does not cover all costs it covers a large amount and I will always have my dogs covered. I personally use Trupanion and as always prior they were amazing on working hand in hand with Canada West Vets to streamline coverage & didn't once dispute her many, many procedures. Her rates do not change based on her use or care. For anyone saying to put away the cost of a premium into savings every month I would have had under 3K to help her, about 20K+ short... I know this would not suit all dogs and there are some exceptions for insurance eligibility but for those that can I highly recommend. I also recommend doing a-lot of research on if the company can change rates/coverage & deductibles on you at any point.
A never ending thank you to everyone involved in keeping a really awesome Chihuahua around for hopefully many more years! Dot will also be seeing her 7th Birthday in the next few weeks! 💛 Dot, Karen, Gunner & jet
